Fall lecture series explores women’s issues

2:39 p.m., Aug. 24, 2004--An upcoming lecture series, sponsored by UD’s Women’s Studies Program, will explore issues faced by women living in the new millennium.

Set to run from 12:20-1:10 p.m., Wednesdays, during the fall semester in 103 Gore Hall, the “Research on Women Lecture Series” is offered as both a one-credit, pass/fail course and as a noncredit educational program for members of the University community.

The lecture schedule is as follows:

Introduction to the Course, (for enrolled students only), Sept. 1;

The Best of All Indoor Sports: Cornelia Bryce Pinchot’s Political Philosophy and Electoral Politics in the 1920s,” a lecture by Megan Jones, UD history graduate student; Sept. 8;

Being a Good Mentor,” a lecture by Lori Pollock, UD associate professor of computer and information sciences, Sept. 15;

Repeat Pregnancy During Adolescence: The Perceptions of Teen Mothers,” a lecture by Judith Herrman, assistant chairperson, UD Department of Nursing, Sept. 22;

The Evolution of Sexist Behavior,” a lecture by Doug Tallamy, chair, UD Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, Sept. 29;

Welfare Reform: A Better Chance for Low-Income Women?” a lecture by Karen Curtis, UD associate professor, School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, Oct. 6;

Vivian’s Legacy: Locating Women in 19th-Century Conjuring,” a lecture by Kainoa Harbottle, UD English graduate student, Oct. 13;

The Mask of Medusa: Fictions of Feminism in the Ancient Greek Theater Studies,” a lecture by Annette Giesecke, UD associate professor of ancient Greek and Roman studies, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Oct. 20;

Stitching for a Living: Mennonite and Hmong Quiltmakers in Pennsylvania,” a lecture by Heather Gibson, UD Winterthur Program in Early American Culture graduate student, Oct. 27;

The White Man’s Indian Woman,” a lecture by Arica Coleman, UD adjunct professor, Department of English at UD, and doctoral candidate, Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, Nov. 3;

Chocolate Eating Habits and the Relationship to Attitudinal and Emotional Aspects of Problem Eating,” a lecture by Melanie Holter, UD adjunct professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Nov. 10;

Gender and Economic Theory,” a lecture by Amanda Bayer, associate professor, Department of Economics, Swarthmore College, Nov. 17;

The Erotics of Submissive Rebellions: Revisiting 19th-Century American Female Sentimentalism,” a lecture by Therese Rizzo, UD English graduate student, Dec. 1; and

Final exam, (for enrolled students only) Dec. 8.
