Leadership series celebrates diversity 3:53 p.m., Sept. 17, 2004--A series of workshops on diversity, Walk a Mile in My Shoes, is being offered by UDs Activities and Programs Office to improve cross-cultural understanding and boost leadership skills. Designed to break down barriers and teach awareness and respect, the free workshops will give participants an overview of challenges faced by different cultural groups and address the importance of building community and leading effectively. Interest meetings for the various workshops will be held at 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 20, and at 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 23, in Room 219 at the Trabant University Center. Participants can pick workshops of their choice as well as an additional optional project. Below is the workshop schedule. Diversity and Leadership, 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28, Trabant University Center Theater, an introduction and overview of the series exploring the definition and value of diversity, by psychologist Mark Fleming, Center for Counseling and Student Development. Identity: More Than a Box to Check, 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 5, Trabant University Center Theater, a workshop exploring how personal identity shapes cultural perspectives, by Michele Kane, assistant director, Residence Life. Lavender Leadership: Effectively Leading Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered People (LGBT), 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21, Trabant University Center Theater, a workshop exploring ways that group leaders can create welcoming environments for LGBT people, by Richie Holland, manager in Human Resources. The Politics of Leadership, 5:15 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 28, Trabant University Center Theater, a workshop exploring the influence that political perspectives have on leadership styles, by Nina Mullin, graduate assistant at the Center for Counseling and Student Development. Privilege, 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 4, Trabant University Center Theater, a workshop looking at the misperceptions and challenges of privilege, by Jeannine Szamreta, complex coordinator in the Office of Residence Life. Gender and Power, 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 9, Multipurpose Room B, Trabant University Center, a workshop addressing the intersections of gender and power and their changing dynamics, by Audrey Ervin, postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Counseling and Student Services. Student leaders of campus organizations are particularly encouraged to participate, and those who successfully complete the series will be recognized at the annual YoUDee student leadership awards banquet in the spring.
