BRC outreach packets exceed 1,200

DUSC President John Cordrey (left) and DUSC members James Hendershot and Dhiren Ponnambalam prepare to distribute “UDo Live Here” outreach packets to residents on East Park Place.
6:04 p.m., Sept. 22, 2004--The Building Responsibility Coalition (BRC) has distributed more than 1,200 outreach packets to Newark residents and students living off-campus to promote dialog and good neighborliness.

The campaign was launched Sept. 14 when Newark Mayor Vance Funk, UD President David P. Roselle and John Bishop, UD associate vice president for counseling and student development, began distribution of the bags.

Among dozens of students and community members who volunteered for the door-to-door campaign were John Cordrey, president of Delaware Undergraduate Student Congress, Newark councilman and UD grad student Kevin J. Vonck, DUSC members, members of Gamma Sigma Sigma sorority and students from a service-learning class about Newark.

"We are pleased with how the campaign is going so far,” Tracy Downs, BRC program director, said. “Within the next few weeks, we will be placing posters around campus and in town, as well as inserting them in The Newark Post and The News Journal. Ads will also start running in The Review this Friday and continue through the semester.

BRC is a campus/community partnership advocating policies for the responsible and legal use of alcohol in order to promote a healthy environment for students, residents and businesses by reducing the harm to people and property caused by high-risk drinking.
