Crop Walk fund-raiser set Oct. 17

4:42 p.m., July 26, 2004--Crop Walk, an event sponsored by Newark churches to raise funds to fight hunger, will be held on Sunday, Oct. 17. Registration will be open from 1-2 p.m. in the parking lot located on Delaware Avenue, behind the Newark Methodist Church at 69 East Main St.

Seventy-five percent of the proceeds will go to hungry nations, and 25 percent will go to the Delaware Food Bank and three smaller agencies, according to Bob Lucas, Crop Walk co-coordinator.

Participants can choose to either do the eight-kilometer walk or the 2.2-kilometer walk. Walkers get sponsors to pledge money for the walk, and then turn it in on the day of the walk.

Last year, Crop Walk raised $8,100 and had 92 participants, including the Gamma Sigma Sigma sorority at UD. Coordinators of the walk said they hope to increase participants and funds at this year’s event.

An organizational meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 24, in the Wilson room of the Newark Methodist Church.

For more information, call Lucas at (302) 731-5364 or Marjorie Purcell at (302) 731-4876.
