Police seek assistance in dog-bite case

1:45 p.m., Sept. 23, 2004--The Newark Police Department’s animal control officer is investigating a dog-bite complaint that occurred around 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 17, in front of Grotto’s restaurant on Main Street.

A 21-year-old college student was seated in the patio area of the restaurant with friends when they were approached by two men walking a light brown, pit bull-type dog on a leash. The victim learned the dog’s name was Capone and was petting it when it jumped up and bit her on the lip. The owners of the dog then left the area, despite a request from the victim that they stay while she determined the extent of her injury. She was not seriously injured and sought treatment the next day at Union Hospital in Elkton, Md.

Officers are now trying to obtain the dog’s rabies vaccination record. If the dog cannot be located, the victim may have to undergo a series of rabies shots. Anyone with information on Capone or the dog’s owners is asked to contact Animal Control Officer Vickers at (302)366-7110, ext. 429.
