UD football’s David Cohen is Coordinator of Year

David Cohen
9:36 a.m., Aug. 27, 2004--University of Delaware assistant football coach David Cohen, who led a unit that recorded the first shutout in the 26-year history of the NCAA Division I-AA national championship game, has been named the division’s 2003 Defensive Coordinator of the Year by American Football Monthly.

Cohen joined Charlie Hall of Northern Arizona University (offense) and Mike Dietzel of Western Kentucky University (special teams) among the coordinators recognized by the magazine.

In 2003, UD led the Atlantic 10 Football Conference in rushing defense (114.3 yards per game), pass efficiency defense (113.36) and scoring defense (15.4 points per game). The Fightin’ Blue Hens were second in the conference and 16th nationally in total defense (303.0 yards per game).

UD yielded a total of 23 points in its four playoff victories, the fewest allowed in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs since the field expanded to 16 teams in 1986.

Under Cohen's direction, senior defensive end Shawn Johnson was named the 2003 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year honor and was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the National Football League draft.

A 1988 business management graduate of Long Island University-C.W. Post, Cohen earned his master's degree in education administration from the State University of New York-Albany in 1990. While at C.W. Post, he was a two-year starter at defensive tackle and earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-Region honors as a senior.

Cohen is the second defensive coordinator from the Atlantic 10 in as many years to receive this distinguished honor, joining 2002 recipient Rich Nagy of the University of Maine.
