NSCA honors Barbarino, UD strength, conditioning coach

Russell Barbarino
4:38 p.m., July 30, 2004--Russell Barbarino, the University of Delaware’s strength and conditioning coach, was honored as a finalist for the Professional of the Year Award at the National Strength and Conditioning Association conference, held July 14-17 in Minneapolis.

Barbarino was honored as a finalist for the fourth straight year. He was joined as a finalist by award-winner Gerard Martin of the University of Connecticut, Michael Doscher of Valdosta (Ga.) State University, Robert Dos Remedios of College of the Canyons in California, Ryan Martin of Davidson College and Joe Owens from the University of Dayton.

The award, now in its 24th year, recognizes the efforts and dedication of college strength and conditioning coaches from around the country and is chosen by a group from the NSCA College Strength and Conditioning Professionals Special Interest Group. The NSCA is the leading authority on strength and conditioning and for the last 27 years has bridged science and application to provide reliable, research-based strength and conditioning information to its members and the general public.

A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Barbarino begins his sixth year as head strength and conditioning coach at UD this season. He is responsible for working directly with more than 800 scholar-athletes on 23 intercollegiate athletics teams, coordinating all strength and conditioning programs. He is also responsible for the operation of the Chuck Hall Weight Rooms in the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center and the Delaware Field House.

Barbarino is a 1995 graduate of Kean (N.J.) University with a degree in adult fitness and exercise science and earned his master's degree in athletic administration from Florida State University in 1997. He is also a two-time world, three-time national and nine-time state power lifting champion who has held world, national and state records in the bench press and the dead lift.

He is certified by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the International Fitness Professionals Association and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. He is also a member of the U.S. Weightlifting Federation, which he serves as a coach.

From 2001 through 2004, Barbarino served as the NSCA state provincial director for Delaware, and he published an article on nutritional supplementation in the April 2001 edition of Strength and Conditioning Journal, a professional journal of the NSCA.
