Talk on Academic Cluelessness today 10:56 a.m., Sept. 23, 2004--Gerald Graff, professor of English and education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will discuss Academic Cluelessness: Causes and Cures, at 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 23, in 126 Alfred Lerner Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public. In his latest book, Clueless in Academe: How Schooling Obscures the Life of the Mind, Graff argues that educational institutions need to do more to close the gap between the culture of public discourse and that of students and other citizens. His talk will explore practical ways to achieve this goal. Graff also is the author of Professing Literature: An Institutional History (1987) and Beyond The Culture Wars: How Teaching the Conflicts Can Revitalize American Education (1992). He has lectured or consulted on curricular issues at more than 200 colleges and universities and has won a Guggenheim fellowship and other research honors. For more information, call (302) 831-2361.
