Class of ‘64 couple to be honored Oct. 2

3:01 p.m., Sept. 30, 2004--Harold D. Smith II and his wife, Barbara K., both from the Class of ’64, will receive UD’s outstanding alumni award during the Homecoming football game Saturday, Oct. 2.

The Smiths, of Middletown, will be honored during the halftime break in the UD Fightin’ Blue Hens vs. University of Maine football game in Delaware Stadium, which kicks off at noon, Lauren Murray BE '95, alumni coordinator in the Office of Alumni and University Relations, said.

The award ceremony is among the highlights of the Homecoming weekend set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-3.

“It’s quite a party,” Murray said. “We have representatives from the classes of ’44, ’54 and ’59 having special reunion activities over the weekend. Alumni from the physical therapy program, the Black Alumni Organization, the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics and many of the sports teams will have reunions. It’s a great opportunity for people to come together and reminisce about their time at UD and catch up with each other.”

Harold Smith graduated with a business degree in accounting while Barbara Smith earned a degree in human resources. Their two daughters, Wendy Shetzler and Heather Trabaudo, their son, Scott, and his wife, Maria, are all UD alumni.

Harold Smith lettered in baseball while an undergraduate and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. In 1998, he received the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics Alumni Award of Excellence. He has served as a member of the athletics steering committee for the Campaign for Delaware since its inception in 1998.

The Smiths are avid Fightin’ Blue Hens fans and loyal Delaware Diamonds. They have created the Harold & Barbara Smith and Family Baseball Scholarship, awarded annually to a member of the Delaware baseball team.
