UD football recruit to compete in Big 33 Classic

1:59 p.m., July 22, 2004--University of Delaware freshman recruit Mike Byrne, an offensive lineman, has been selected to play in the prestigious PNC Big 33 Football All-Star Game at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 24, in Hershey, Pa.

The 47th annual PNC Big 33 Football Classic, which will be played at Hersheypark Stadium, matches the top players from Pennsylvania and Ohio. The mission of the Big 33 is to showcase and develop excellence in students and the community while raising funds for academic scholarships and other charitable activities. Since 1985, more than $2.1 million in academic scholarships have been awarded.

Byrne is a 6-foot 5-inch, 275-pound center from Manheim Central High School, which won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA championship in 2003. At Manheim Central, Byrne was a teammate of another UD recruit, quarterback Jarryd Moyer.

Byrne is one of four Atlantic 10 Football Conference freshmen that will participate in the game. The others, all of whom will attend Villanova University, are defensive back Eugene Clay and defensive linemen Dave Dalessandro and Brian Hentosz.

Ohio State boasts the most players participating with 11, followed by Penn State and Pittsburgh, with seven apiece.

Described as the “Super Bowl of high school football,” Big 33 alumni include Tony Dorsett, Dan Marino and Joe Montana, as well as current NFL standouts Kerry Collins, Marvin Harrison and Orlando Pace. At least one player from the Big 33 has appeared in every Super Bowl contest.
