Delaware announces men’s, women’s basketball schedules

1:48 p.m., Aug. 13, 2004--The University of Delaware has announced the 2004-05 basketball schedule, with the men’s team scheduled to travel to Puerto Rico, California and Ohio and the women’s team making its first trip ever to Arizona.

Head Coach David Henderson and the men’s team, which went 16-12 last season, will open play Nov. 19 at Ohio State University of the Big 10 Conference. The Fightin’ Blue Hens will tune up for the opener with an exhibition game against Widener University on Nov. 4 at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center

Head Coach Tina Martin and the women’s team, which finished 19-10 last season, will begin the regular season with a game against Loyola College of Maryland on Nov. 21 at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. The women will prepare for the opener with an exhibition game Nov. 6.

In addition to the trip to Ohio, the UD men will also travel to the San Francisco Bay area to take on St. Mary's College on Dec. 2 and the University of San Francisco on Dec. 4.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will make a return to the San Juan Shootout tournament in Puerto Rico from Dec. 18-23. Among the teams competing in the three-game tournament are Auburn, Toledo and Middle Tennessee. The Hens competed at the San Juan Shootout in 1996-97, defeating Tennessee-Chattanooga and the University of Florida to finish fifth in the eight-team tournament.

Other nonconference opponents include Mt. St. Mary's, which will visit UD for the Hens’ home opener on Nov. 27, Loyola, Rider and American.

The UD men will open Colonial Athletic Association action against Drexel on Dec. 8 at The Bob.

The UD women will compete in the University of Arizona Tournament to be held Dec. 4-5 in Tucson. Other teams in the tournament are the host, Arizona, and the University of North Carolina Greensboro and Weber State.

The Hens will also compete in a tournament to be held Dec. 29-30 at Lehigh University. Other teams in the tournament are the host, Lehigh, and Alabama and Yale.

Other nonconference opponents include Stony Brook, Fairfield, Georgetown and La Salle.

The UD women will play their CAA opener on Jan. 2 at Virginia Commonwealth.

For the first time in school history in 2004-05, every UD men's and women's basketball game will be broadcast live on network radio. All men's games will be heard on WRDX-FM 94.7, and all women's games will be broadcast on WWTX-AM 1290.

Season tickets for the 2004-05 men's and women's seasons will go on sale Aug. 16, with single game ticket sales beginning Oct. 11.
