UD women’s basketball tops JMU, clinches title

UD’s Tiara Malcom had 19 points in the victory over James Madison.
9:52 a.m., March 4, 2005--The University of Delaware women's basketball team clinched the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship and the top seed in next week's conference tournament with a hard-fought 59-52 victory over host James Madison University on Thursday night in Harrisonburg, Va.

UD senior forward Tiara Malcom led four Fightin’ Blue Hens in double figures with 19 points and eight rebounds. Senior Tiffany Young scored 14 points, including six in a key stretch late in the game, and Amanda Blackstone and Tyresa Smith scored 10 points each.

"Our kids just played great tonight, I am so proud of them," UD Head Coac Tina Martin said. "I'm happy for them, they deserve a regular season championship. It's gratifying but there is more work to be done. Our kids stepped up when we needed it tonight and gave us a big psychological lift. We know that when we're under pressure, we can get the job done. We really did a great job in the final four minutes."

James Madison entered the game having won six of its last seven. The Dukes kept it close, trailing by just a basket at halftime and grabbing a 42-41 lead with 8:27 left to play before the Hens went on an 8-2 run.

With the victory, UD closed the regular season with a record of 23-4 overall and 16-2 in the CAA. It is the second time in three years that the Hens have shared the regular season conference championship or won it outright.

UD hopes to end Old Dominion University’s dominance in the conference tournament, which will be played March 9-12 at the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The Monarchs have won 13 consecutive CAA championships.
