Acclaimed dance company kicks off spring arts series

4:33 p.m., Feb. 9, 2005--The acclaimed Paul Taylor Dance Company, one of the world's most respected ensembles, will perform in UD’s 2004-05 Performing Arts Series at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 11, in Mitchell Hall.

Now in its 50th year, the company has performed Taylor's works in more than 60 countries and 450 cities and has represented the United States at arts festivals in dozens of countries and has toured extensively under the aegis of the U.S. Department of State.

Taylor has been called a genius, a legend and a cultural icon. Time magazine calls him "the reigning master of modern dance," and The New York Daily News declares him to be "the best choreographer in the world."

Taylor considers himself, above all, a reporter whose job is to observe and record his impressions. Whether investing everyday movement with breathtaking beauty or reminding audience members that they are not as removed from our prehistoric ancestors as they might like to think, his work is invested with astonishing inventiveness, poignancy and wit.

Tickets are $17 for the general public, $12 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $5 for students and children. A 15 percent is available for group sales of 20 or more tickets per show.

For tickets, call the Hartshorn box office at (302) 831-2204, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

At noon, Friday, Feb. 11, the Hartshorn box office will stop selling tickets for the performance to allow for the transition to the Mitchell Hall box office. Any remaining tickets will be available for purchase in person at the Mitchell Hall box office on the day of the performance beginning one hour before the scheduled start time of the performance.

The University of Delaware 2004-05 Performing Arts Series and Family Series are made possible, in part, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency committed to promoting and supporting the arts in Delaware, as well as support by Embassy Suites-Newark/Wilmington South and Arby's.
