UD Police assist with burglary task force

6:51 p.m., Feb. 16, 2005--University of Delaware Police are participating in a task force established earlier this month to investigate recent burglaries plaguing the tri-state region around the city of Newark.

Other agencies in the task force include the Newark Police Department, New Castle County Police Department, Delaware State Police, Pennsylvania State Police, Cecil County (Md.) Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Probation and Parole.

“Crimes of this nature are particularly troubling to the community and heighten a sense of fear, particularly when older residents are victimized,” Lawrence O. Thornton, director of public safety at UD, said. “The University Police enjoy a close working relationship with the Newark Police and the other police agencies in the greater Newark area, and we are happy to assist in combating and investigating the recent rash of home burglaries.”

“Knowing that these criminal acts can quickly spread into other jurisdictions, the involved agencies agreed to form this task force as a matter of public safety,” Newark Police Chief Gerald T. Conway said. “With the combined efforts of all agencies sharing information and working side by side, I am confident that the sense of alarm that now grips our citizens will soon subside.”

Anonymous information can be provided to the burglary task force by calling 302-453-8741 or Delaware Crimestoppers at 800-TIP-3333. Information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the home invasions may result in a reward up to $1,000.
