UD senior Sara Stephens wins CAA championship

10:54 a.m., Feb. 28, 2005--Senior Sara Stephens was the University of Delaware’s lone champion at the Colonial Athletic Association swimming and diving tournament as she captured the 200 butterfly in a school record time of 2:03.26 on Saturday evening at George Mason University's Jim McKay Natatorium.

The UD women’s team finished ninth and the men’s team 10th in the conference championship meet. George Mason won its fourth straight CAA women's team title and the University of North Carolina Wilmington won its fourth straight men's team title.

Stephens had six top-10 finishes during the championship meet and also finished second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 200 individual medley.

Also for the UD women, Meredith Law finished fifth in the 1,650 freestyle and was joined by Stephens, Sara Reed and Ellen Heinz on the 400 freestyle relay team that finished seventh. Law had six top-10 finishes during the meet.

For the UD men, junior Levan Beridze had the best finish of the meet, coming in fourth in the 100 freestyle. Beridze recorded the second best time in school history with a clocking of 46.02.

Also for the men, the 400 freestyle relay team of Andrew Zinn, Brendan Spencer, Adam Blomberg and Beridze finished in seventh place.
