Delaware softball team drops four in tourney

10:42 a.m., Feb. 28, 2005--The University of Delaware softball team went 1-4 in season opening action at the Mid-Atlantic Softball College Umpires Association Tournament in Norfolk, Va.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens opened the tournament with a 6-0 victory over Norfolk State University on Friday, then fell 8-2 to Villanova University and 9-0 to San Jose State University on Saturday and 1-0 to Radford University and 4-0 to Villanova on Sunday.

In the victory over Norfolk State, senior first baseman Jenn Joseph had three hits and a run batted in to lead the Hens. Three UD pitchers, junior Lindsay Jones and sophomores Kelsey Knapp and Carolynn Sloat, combined for the win.

In Saturday’s games, Joseph took the loss against Villanova and Sloat the loss against San Jose State. UD’s runs against Villanova were scored by freshman first baseman Barbara Traynor, who came across on a double by sophomore shortstop Michelle Plant, and by Plant, who scored on a single by freshman second baseman Allison Borchers.

In Sunday’s games, Sloat took the loss against Radford and Joseph the loss against Villanova.
