Delawares Smith wins CAA leadership award
The CAA presents the Ehlers Award annually to the mens basketball scholar-athlete who embodies the highest standards of leadership, integrity and sportsmanship through his academic and athletic achievement. It is named in honor of Dean Ehlers, who was the first director of athletics at James Madison University and served as president of the CAA during the founding of the conference. Smith, who averages 3.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game and ranks second on the team with 16 blocks, has been involved in a number of programs that benefit the community. He worked as the Each One Reach One mentor program coordinator, conducted men's forums for issues in the black community and served as a mentor to students at Kirk Middle School in Newark. Smith also was active in the Greater Newark Boys and Girls Club and worked with at-risk children in the Jacob's Ladder program. As a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity at UD, he organized social events and voter registration drives. Smith is UDs second straight Dean Ehlers Leadership Award recipient, following Mike Ames, who was presented the award last year. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
