Faculty Senate approves name changes 5:17 p.m., Feb. 8, 2005--The University Faculty Senate shortened the name of one college and renamed and reorganized several departments and programs at its meeting on Monday, Feb. 7. These changes will go to the Board of Trustees for final approval. After voting to change the name of the College of Health and Nursing Sciences to College of Health Sciences, senators then agreed to change the name of the Department of Nursing within that college to School of Nursing. The change is intended to assist in the recruitment of nursing faculty interested in research and the development of a doctoral program in nursing sciences. Two organizational changes within the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy were then approved by the senate. The undergraduate major and minor in leadership were moved from the Department of Consumer Studies to the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, and the Department of Consumer Studies was renamed the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies. These changes are effective in July. Senators then approved two new honors degrees within the Department of Food and Resource Economics in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The new bachelor of science honor degrees are in food and agribusiness management and in resource economics. A total of 16 undergraduate curricular changes were passed without challenge, but a discussion of requirements was requested by Sen. Jerry Firestone on a proposed concentration in emergency and environmental management within the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. Firestone said that the new concentration didnt seem to require any environment or management courses. Eric Rise, associate professor of criminal justice, said the three-course concentration was an addition for students interested in the work of the Disaster Research Center, which is associated with the department. These same students may want to work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) or Delawares Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), he said, and so could take the appropriate electives in other fields if this remains an area of interest. The proposal passed 26 to 17 with one abstention. In other business, senators voted to establish the Faculty Senate Exemplary Service Award to recognize "members who have contributed an extraordinary amount of service" to the Faculty Senate for a period of at least three years. Earlier in the meeting, Provost Dan Rich urged senators to look at a preliminary report online, Preview of the Report on Academic Progress [www.udel.edu/facsen/Provost/index.html ], to be discussed at the March meeting. In the spirit of dialog, I wanted to give my colleagues a chance to review the document and make suggestions for strengthening it, Rich said. It is a draftnot the first and not the last.
