Wellness screenings yield numbers to live by

4:11 p.m., Feb. 14, 2005--UD’s Employee Wellness Center is offering multi-health screenings from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 23, in 206 Trabant University Center for those who want to check their blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar levels.

UD employees can get the popular health screenings--blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar--in one package. The only procedure required is a small finger stick sample of blood. Fasting is not required, however, participants should not eat within one hour of the appointment. These blood test numbers indicate risk for heart disease and diabetes.

According to Marianne Carter, director of the wellness program, "Many individuals have elevated numbers, but no symptoms alerting them to a problem. It's important to know your numbers. This is a case where what you don't know can hurt you!"

In the past, knowing the “numbers” has motivated participants to make changes in diet and activity levels, changes that can turn elevated numbers around, reducing the risk for disease.

The cost of the multi-screening is 15 Wellness Dollars, plus a $5 copay. Employees receive 50 wellness dollars to use on programming before June 30. Additional information about wellness program offerings is available at [www.udel.edu/wellness].

To register for the multi-screening, call (302) 831-8388 and schedule a 10-minute appointment.
