Students collect Bookstore prizes

Ryan Funanage
5:27 p.m., Feb. 16, 2005--Ryan Funanage didn’t even know there was a contest going on when he won $200 at the University Bookstore last week.

“The lady behind the register handed me a couple chocolates and said, ‘See if you win.’ I didn’t even know about the special,” Funanage, a sophomore, finance major, said. “I was shocked because I don’t normally win stuff.’’

The Bookstore is giving away 23,000 chocolate squares to students who buy at least one used book there before Feb. 26. A $200 gift certificate for books was hidden inside the square Funanage got, and 10 others carry $50 book certificates.

Jennifer Galt, bookstore manager, said staff members suggested borrowing the golden ticket premise from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and switching the name to the Golden Hen Ticket.

Grad student Mary Beth Jones said her 5-year-old daughter opened the chocolate and found her $50 gift ticket. “I was glad to save some money on books for the spring semester, and I have never really won anything before,’’ Jones said.

Junior Allison Keegan said her texts were expensive this semester so she was happy to open the chocolate and find a $50 ticket. “I never win anything. I’m glad I decided to buy my books from the school bookstore,’’ she said.

Junior Sommer Alvater, who won a $50 certificate, said she was happy just to get free chocolate with her purchase. “I am a chocoholic,’’ Altaver said. “The golden ticket was just an extra-sweet bonus.’’

The contest continues until Saturday, Feb. 26. Galt said there are still three $50 gift certificates out there.
