UD women’s basketball gets 21 votes in poll

3:30 p.m., Feb. 8, 2005--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team has picked up two more votes in the USA Today/ESPN poll, which features the top 25 teams in NCAA Division I.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, who have won 16 straight games and are 18-2 overall and 11-0 atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings, received votes in the poll for the third straight week. UD jumped from one vote two weeks ago to 19 last week, and received 21 votes this week.

The Hens are third among teams also receiving votes, behind Penn State with 44 and the University of New Mexico with 27. Florida State University is ranked No. 25 with 63 votes.

UD will play an important CAA game against perennial power Old Dominion University at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 11, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. The Hens defeated Old Dominion 73-70 earlier this season in Norfolk, snapping the Monarchs’ 122-game home winning streak against CAA opponents.

Old Dominion, which has won 13 straight conference titles, remains a formidable foe and will enter Friday night’s game on an eight-game winning streak. The Monarchs are 13-6 overall and 9-1 in the CAA.

UD is attempting to set a women’s basketball attendance record at the game and is offering four free tickets per identification card to University faculty and staff. For details, call (302) 831-2257.
