Newsletter highlights critical thinking

4:28 p.m., Feb. 14, 2005--The January edition of Writing from the Center, the University Writing Center’s online newsletter, is now available at [www.english.udel.edu/wc/resource/news.html].

This month’s newsletter features three faculty members from different disciplines sharing innovative practices they have used to help students deepen critical thinking and improve writing.

“Student Peer Review of Writing: Quality Improvements Beyond the Comments,” the article written by Joshua Duke, associate professor of food and resource economics, describes his experience with student peer review in his “Food and Resource Economics” course.

James M. Dean, professor of English, in his article, “Blogging as a Writing Tool,” shows how blogging engages students in reflective thinking and informal communication that sharpens writing.

In Louis F. Rossi’s article, “Writing as a Means of Facilitating Mathematical Reasoning in Students,” Rossi, associate professor of mathematical sciences, demonstrates how implementing writing milestones engages students in the process of writing and encourages thoughtful, informed revision on longer mathematics projects.
