Delaware’s O’Brien wins New Balance mile

9:22 a.m., Feb. 8, 2005--University of Delaware freshman Colleen O'Brien won the mile run at the New Balance Collegiate Indoor Track and Field Invitational, held last weekend at the New York Armory.

The annual meet attracted some the top teams in the nation, including Louisiana State University, the University of Texas, Penn State University, the University of Maryland and Villanova University.

O'Brien, who has now captured five meet titles this indoor season, won the mile run in a time of 4:58.28. That is the third fastest time in University history.

O’Brien also finished 27th in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:18.69, the fifth fastest time in UD history.

Also at the meet, the UD men's distance medley relay team of Charlie Dielmann, Dave Sherman, Mike Zeberkiewicz and Brad Dodson finished second in a time of 10:08.96, just six seconds off the winning time by the College of New Jersey.

The UD 4 x 800 meter relay team of Kyle Schmid, Mike Roth, Zeberkiewicz and Dodson finished second in a time of 7:46.87, four seconds off Lafayette College's winning time.

Also for the UD men, the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Pat Henry, Charlie Williams, Phil Smiley and Sherman finished sixth, Dielmann finished 16th in the 1,000 meters and Williams finished 27th in the 400 meters.

Roger Brown finished 34th in the 60 meters, Rashaad Woodard finished 37th in the 60 meters and 38th in the 200 meters, Henry finished 39th in the 200 meters and 40th in the 60 meters, Smiley finished 41st in the 400 meters and Sherman finished 46th in the 400 meters.

For the UD women, Kate Klim finished 12th in the 3,000 meters and Brittany Wright finished 19th in the 60 meters, breaking her own University record with a time of 7.77. Wright also was 43rd in the 200 meters.

Rayna Horsey finished 37th in the 60 meters, and Kristen Frustillo finished 53rd in the 200 meters and 57th in the 400 meters.
