LabWrite workshop offered 3:52 p.m., Feb. 25, 2005--How to Use LabWrite: Helping Students Learn Science by Writing Better Lab Reports, an interactive workshop for faculty, teaching assistants and others who oversee science labs, will be held from 2-5 p.m., Wednesday, March 9, in 110 Memorial Hall. Sponsored by grants from the National Science Foundation, the workshop will be taught Mike Carter and Miriam Ferzli of North Carolina State University, creators of LabWrite, a free online site, developed to help undergraduates write more effective lab reports. An English professor, Carter teaches science writing and is the author of Where Writing Begins. Ferzli has degrees in biological sciences and science education and lectures and directs a biology lab. The workshop will present an overview of the LabWrite site [www.ncsu.edu/labwrite], offer tips on using the site effectively and provide hands-on experience with the LabWrite web site. LabWrite is designed for a wide range of sciences and is useful for all levels of undergraduate education. A control-group study showed that students who use LabWrite are significantly more effective at learning science than those who use typical lab report instruction. The workshop is hosted by Information Technologies-User Services/PRESENT, UDs teaching, learning and technology center, and the UD Task Force on Oral and Written Communication. Registration is required, and space is limited. To register, go to [http://present.smith.udel.edu/calendar/detail.php?classid=676Stephen]. For more information send e-mail to Dee Baer at [dbaer@udel.edu]. Participants with wireless-network-access laptop computers are asked to bring them to the workshop. Wireless laptops will be provided for other participants. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
