Video profiles prolific author, journalist

4:13 p.m., March 3, 2005--McKay Jenkins, Cornelius A. Tilghman Professor of English, discusses his own writing and the teaching of journalism in the newest installment of Windows on The Green, video profiles of UD’s named professors posted at [www.udel.edu/PR/windows/].

Jenkins, author of four nonfiction books, often writes about adventurers. The White Death: Tragedy and Heroism in an Avalanche Zone focused on five men who undertook an ill-fated winter climb in Glacier National Park. The Last Ridge: The Epic Story of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division and the Assault on Hitler’s Europe. chronicled the champion skiers and ski bums who made up the U.S. Army’s storied 10th Mountain Division during World War II.

His newest book, Bloody Falls of the Coppermine: Madness, Murder and the Collision of Cultures in the Artic, 1913, is the true crime story of an obscure slaying of two Catholic priests in the Arctic, the Canadian mountie who traveled 3,000 miles through the frozen wilderness to find the suspects, and the two Eskimo suspects who were first acquitted of the crime and later convicted.

Jenkins does his research in the archives and often in the wild, retracing his subjects’ paths.

He joins seven other named professors profiled in the continuing Windows on The Green series produced by Information Technologies-University Media Services in collaboration with the Office of Public Relations.

The Windows on The Green series marks the endowment of UD’s 100th named professorship last year. An endowed chair is one of the highest honors a faculty member can receive and one of the most important gifts a donor can make to the University.
