Big game is tonight: Blue Hens host ODU

9:18 a.m., Feb. 11, 2005--It is the big game. Tonight, the University of Delaware women’s basketball team will take on perennial Colonial Athletic Association powerhouse Old Dominion University in a possible preview of the conference tournament final with tip-off at 7 p.m. in the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens enter the game 18-2 overall and 11-0 in the CAA, and with 16 straight victories, just one short of the UD record. The Hens defeated Old Dominion 73-70 earlier this season in Norfolk, snapping the Monarchs’ 122-game home winning streak against CAA opponents.

Old Dominion has not lost since that game and brings its own eight-game winning streak into The Bob. The Monarchs are 13-6 overall, including a 69-61 win over No. 11-ranked Rutgers University, and are 9-1 in the conference.

Key players for Old Dominion include Shareese Grant, a 5-foot 8-inch senior guard who is averaging 15.7 points per game, and 5-11 Lawona Davis, a junior guard/forward who is averaging 11.3 points per game and has hit a conference-best 91.4 percent of her free throws.

Freshman Tiffany Green, a 6-2 forward, is averaging 8.1 rebounds per game, and she and 6-1 sophomore forward Sherida Triggs are both averaging more than one blocked shot per game.

Wendy Larry, a former player for Old Dominion, has been head coach of the Monarchs since 1987. Her Old Dominion teams have won 13 straight CAA championships.

UD is led by senior forward Tiara Malcom, the preseason selection as CAA Player of the Year. Malcom leads the team with 15.7 points per game and has blocked 21 shots.

Sophomore guard Tyresa Smith is scoring 11.5 points per game and has 71 steals and senior forward Tiffany Young is scoring 10.7 points per game.

In her ninth season as head coach of the Hens is Tina Martin, whose teams have won 19 or more games each of the last five seasons and in 2002-03 shared the regular season CAA championship with Old Dominion.
