Hearts and Minds film festival March 2-6

5:09 p.m., Feb. 17, 2005--Human, civil and economic rights; health, cultural, social norms, family life, politics, the environment, the law, individualism, social movements and the arts are the subjects of the Hearts and Minds film festival at the 4th annual Wilmington Independent Film Festival, Wednesday-Sunday, March 2-6.

Three UD faculty members will be leading discussions during the festival.

Principal screening and special event venues include: Theater N at the Nemours Building, the Carvel State Auditorium, the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts and theatre space and film office in the Shipyard Shops area on the Wilmington Riverfront.

Sponsored by Cityfest Inc. of Wilmington, the Hearts and Minds festival, online at [www.ci.wilmington.de.us/events.htm], will showcase new independent works and a small number of select classics along with four themed and interactive “conversations” with directors and scholars, including a look at how Americans define national identity through film.

"Reel Americans" will be facilitated by Tom Leitch, UD professor of English and director of the film studies program. Three other “conversations” will be facilitated by Guy Alchon, UD associate professor of history, and Patrick Stoner, UD instructor and a film critic for WHYY-TV.

The festival also will feature daytime block programming involving collaboration with community organizations and student and special interest audiences.

The festival opens on Wednesday with a conversation with director Tim Reid. On Thursday evening, the conversation will feature a look at comedy and society with satirist and comedian Harry Shearer. These will be facilitated by Stoner.

The fourth conversation, "The Policywatchers" with Peter Davis, documentary filmmaker, facilitated by Alchon, highlights the fourth day, which includes evening screenings, the Youth Media Café, a reception and the audiences’ favorite film selections. The festival closes with a brunch and screenings of those selections on Sunday.
