Blue Hen field hockey team wins academic honors

9:21 a.m., March 2, 2005--The University of Delaware field hockey team placed five players on the 2004 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic Squad.

In addition, UD was one of 57 programs nationally to be presented the NFHCA National Academic Team Award for having an overall grade point average of 3.0 or better for the fall semester. The Fightin’ Blue Hens compiled a team grade point average of 3.147 with 14 of the 22 players reaching 3.0 or higher.

Named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad were senior Leah Geib, junior Kaili Kao, freshman A.J. Karsten, sophomore Lindsey Piester and sophomore Dusti Vanderwende.

Geib capped an outstanding four-year career by earning second team STX/NFHCA All-American honors and being named to the CAA All-Tournament team. She was named the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field hockey for the second straight season, is a College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-American candidate and is a nominee for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship award.

Kao, an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar nominee, played in 14 games and started seven on defense, Vanderwende played in four games as a midfielder and Piester appeared in 18 games with three starts as a midfielder and defender. Karsten did not see game action this season.

UD, led by Head Coach Carol Miller, enjoyed one of the finest seasons in school history in 2004 when the Hens went 15-7, captured the Colonial Athletic Association championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
