MIT prof to lecture on e-mail threading 2:06 p.m., March 2, 2005--JoAnn Yates, Sloan Distinguished Professor of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technologys Sloan School of Management, will speak on Conversational Coherence through Threading: Using E-mail Threads to Coordinate Distributed Work, at 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, in 123 Memorial Hall. A conversational thread is defined as a steam of conversation in which successive contributions continue a topic, following an initial contribution which introduces a new topic. Yates will discuss the mechanisms and threads that are needed to maintain coherence and continuity in oral or written conversation. She will talk about her studies of the specific mechanisms that members of a software development team and start-up company used to coordinate their virtual work. Yates studies communication and information as they shape and are shaped by technologies, ideologies and work practices over time, both in contemporary and past organizations. She is the author of Control Through Communication: The Rise of System in American Management, which studied the evolution of communication systems in such firms as the DuPont Co, from 1850-1920. Her new book is Structuring the Information Age: Life Insurance and Technology in the 20th Century. Yates is president of the Business History Conference and serves on the board of trustees of the Hagley Museum & Library.
