Dance party raises $800 for tsunami relief

2 p.m., Feb. 17, 2005--A Feb. 12 dance party sponsored by Alternative Campus Events (ACE) raised $800 for tsunami relief efforts.

ACE committee member Doug Sutton, AS ’05, said proceeds will go to UD’s United Effort Fund, which will fund fishing boats for villagers who lost their livelihoods in the Dec. 26 tsunami that hit South Asia and East Africa.

“The Hearts Around the World, Hearts from UD” dance party at the Stone Balloon was an alcohol-free event designed to
kick off the spring semester in a positive way, Sutton said. In addition to ACE, participating student organizations included the American Chemical Society and the Tae Kwon Do Club.

“The dance party was a great way for students to come together and have fun in an alcohol-free environment,” Tracy Downs, program director of the Building Responsibility Coalition, said. “Events like this remind students that there are plenty of opportunities, on and off campus, to have a good time without alcohol.”

ACE sponsors dance parties and other non-alcoholic events throughout the semester. But, with the majority of committee members now entering their last semester on campus, ACE is seeking new members to keep the organization viable and visible in the years ahead.

“It’s been a great experience being involved in ACE,” Sutton said. “I’d recommend it to anyone.”
