Beethoven concert series begins March 7

5:13 p.m., March 4, 2005--UD’s Department of Music will present faculty cellist, Lawrence Stomberg with guest artist, pianist Jonathan Faiman, in Beethoven: 1796, the first installment of performances of the complete works for cello and piano by Beethoven, at 7 p.m., Monday, March 7, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. DuPont Music Building.

This performance will present Beethoven’s early works for cello and piano, all of which were written in the year 1796. On the program are two Sonatas for Piano and Cello, Opus 5, nos. 1 and 2, and two sets of Variations, in G Major on Handel’s Judas Maccabeus theme (a work without an opus) and in F Major, on a theme from Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute (Opus 66).

Cellist Lawrence Stomberg joined the University of Delaware this year, having moved from Oklahoma, where he was assistant principal cellist in the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and assistant professor of cello at Oklahoma State University. Stomberg has enjoyed a wide-ranging musical career as chamber musician, orchestral player and pedagogue.

The New York Times has described Jonathan Faiman, a multiple ASCAP award winner, as “a pianist with the kind of technique that affords remarkable clarity even in the speediest lines.” Critically acclaimed, his solo CD, Hie Up The Mountain, has been called “a major contribution to the available body of music by the generation now making its mark in American music.” He is a member of the Locrian Chamber Players and The Actors Company Theatre, with whom Mr. Faiman has composed and performed for numerous concerts and productions.

The Beethoven sonata cycle is the latest collaboration of the Stomberg-Faiman duo, who have been performing together since 1989.

Tickets for the performance are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and $3 for students. Tickets for all concerts may be purchased in advance at the Bob Carpenter Center or Trabant University Center box office or by phone through TicketMaster, at 302.984.2000, where a service charge may apply. Tickets can also be purchased at the door, subject to availability.
