Collins hired to coach Hen defensive backs 9:11 a.m., Feb. 16, 2005--Isaac Collins, former associate head football coach at the College of the Holy Cross, has been named the defensive secondary coach for the University of Delaware. Fightin Blue Hens Head Coach K.C. Keeler announced the hiring of Collins on Tuesday. He will replace Paul Williams, who joined the staff of former UD player Bill Cubit at Western Michigan University. Collins coached the last five seasons at Lehigh University and at Holy Cross. "We are very excited to have found someone with the type of experience that Isaac possesses," Keeler said. "He has coached the defensive secondary for seven years and has also served as a coordinator and as an associate head coach. He came very highly recommended, and we think he can add to a staff that I feel is one of the best in the country." Despite the loss of safety Garron Bible and All-American cornerback Sidney Haugabrook, the Hens return four players with starting experience in the secondary in senior cornerback Roger Brown, junior cornerback Rashaad Woodard, third-year starting safety Kyle Campbell and junior safety Nicos Chavis. Also returning are veterans John Russ, Zach Thomas and Jeff Robinson, and promising redshirt freshmen Fred Andrew, Emanuel Beneby, Jahiri Gunthorpe, Rafiq Gunthorpe and Mario McLean. Collins is a 1994 graduate of the University of Rochester with a degree in political science. In addition to his work at Lehigh and Holy Cross, he has been an assistant coach at Hobart College and Columbia University. He also completed summer National Football League minority fellowships with the New York Giants in 1999 and with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2001. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
