Fraternities, sororities earn top honors

3:22 p.m., Feb. 24, 2005--Chapter Assessment Program (CAP) scores for fall 2004 are in, and most of UD’s 33 fraternities and sororities have outdone themselves.

Sigma Phi Epsilon and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternities are the first chapters in CAP’s four-year history to receive perfect scores.

“The Chapter Assessment Program results evidence the very positive efforts our fraternities and sororities have achieved this past semester,” Marilyn Prime, director of student centers, said. “CAP rewards the intellectual, service and diversity components of campus life. The fact that the Greek male and female GPAs exceeded the GPAs of non-affiliated students shows that both fraternities and sororities value academic success and chapter pride.”

Sorority sisters’ GPA was 3.2 while their nonsorority counterpart earned an average 3.0. Fraternity brothers earned an average 2.9 GPA compared to nonfraternity male average of 2.7. Both were up over 2003 levels.

CAP is an evaluation system created by the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council, in coordination with the Activities and Programs Office and the Faculty Senate, to improve the management and the quality of sorority and fraternity chapters.

Scores are based on four standards--academics, chapter management, membership development and community involvement. This year’s scores are on the CAP web site at [www.udel.edu/student-centers/FandS/reports/index.html].

In evaluating the Greek organizations, CAP statistics show that fraternity and sorority members are smarter, more popular and more giving than ever before.

Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Phi Alpha and Alpha Xi Delta each will receive a scholarship award of $500 and the President's Gold Cup Award for the most outstanding gold chapters. The Gold Cup circulates among the winning chapters yearly.

Money is only given to the top three ranked gold chapters of fraternities and sororities.

Ranked in the gold level are Alpha Phi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Gamma Sigma Sigma, Kapa Alpha Theta sororities and Alpha Phi Alpha, Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Chi and Tau Epsion Phi fraternities.

At the silver level are Chi Upsilon Sigma, Lambda Pi Chi, Sigma Alpha and Sigma Kappa sororities and Alpha Tau Omega, Kappa Sigma, Phi Sigma Kappa, Sigma Alpha Mu, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Theta Chi fraternities.

Bronze designation is given to Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta sororities and Kappa Delta Rho, Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternities.

Membership in fraternities and sororities is higher this year, with sororities up 13 percent and fraternity membership up 17 percent, for a total Greek membership of 1,513 students, or 10 percent of the UD full-time student population.

During the fall semester, UD fraternities and sororities donated more than $37,000 to 27 charities, often working together, and they completed community service projects for 47 local organizations.
