UD men’s basketball defeated by VCU

8:47 a.m., Feb. 17, 2005--Although junior forward Harding Nana scored a career-high 30 points, the University of Delaware men’s basketball team fell 83-73 to Virginia Commonwealth University in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Wednesday night in Richmond.

With the loss, the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell to 10-16 overall and 7-8 in the CAA.

The Hens will return home for a game against Hofstra University at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. It will be the final home game for UD’s three seniors, point guard Mike Slattery and forwards Calvin Smith and Robin Wentt.

In Wednesday’s loss, Nana had 11 rebounds to go with his 30 points. Slattery had 10 assists to move into sole possession of fourth place all-time in the CAA with 583.

VCU forward Nick George had a career-best 33 points, and impressed UD Head Coach David Henderson. “He played a tremendous game,” Henderson said. “I thought we played some good defense at times but it seemed he just willed the ball into the basket.”

Henderson was pleased with the effort of the Hens, who have been hampered by injuries and, last night, illness.

“I thought we played terrific basketball tonight,” he said. “We didn’t lose, we got beat. We brought it but VCU just kept making play after play after play. We came up short tonight but if we keep playing like this, we'll have some success down the stretch."
