Hen baseball team to visit UNC Greensboro

9:25 a.m., Feb. 16, 2005--The University of Delaware baseball team is preparing to open the 2005 season with a three-game series at the University of North Carolina Greensboro.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will face UNC Greensboro on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18-20. The first home game will be played March 3 against St. Joseph’s University at Bob Hannah Stadium.

UD Head Coach Jim Sherman’s team has eight position starters back from the 2004 team that reached the Colonial Athletic Association title game and nearly defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The Hens went 33-24 last season.

Among the returning players for UD are first team All-CAA catcher Brian Valichka, who hit .362 with seven home runs and 27 runs batted in, and second team All-CAA designated hitter Kelly Buber, who hit .343 with nine home runs and 51 runs batted in. Senior right-hander Scott Rambo, who went 7-6 with 79 strikeouts, will anchor the pitching staff.

UNC Greensboro is a member of the Southern Conference, and went 33-21-1 in 2004. The Spartans return five position players and four starting pitchers.
