Craig Cary, associate professor of marine studies, was featured in a Jan. 24 News Journal story concerning his research in the extremes, from the depths of the Pacific Ocean to the icy wilds of Antarctica. Kimmie Meissner, a member of the UD Figure Skating Club who won the bronze medal at the recent U.S. National Championships, was the subject of a feature story in the Jan. 23 News Journal. Peter Williams, professor of art, was quoted in a Jan. 23 News Journal story on race in America and in Delaware. Jon Helbig, UD athletics head equipment manager, was quoted in a Jan. 22 News Journal story on how to stay warm at the frigid Philadelphia Eagles playoff game. Joel Best, chairperson of the UD Department of Sociology, was quoted in the Jan. 21 The Numbers Guy column in the Wall Street Journal concerning the misuse of statistics, in this case allegations as to the percentage of children who have been sexually solicited online. "Expressing threats in terms of dangers to our children is very emotionally powerful in our society," Best, the author of the books Damned Lies and Statistics and More Damned Lies and Statistics, said. ALUMNI Julie Van Deusen, a champion diver for UD who graduated in 2003 with a bachelors degree in exercise physiology, was featured in a Jan. 26 Daily Pennsylvanian story, which said she has transformed the University of Pennsylvania diving team. Brian August, a star baseball player for UD who was the America East Conference Player of the Year in 1997, has been named head baseball coach at Wilmington College, the Jan. 26 News Journal reports. Katie Compton, who holds a UD bachelors degree in exercise science, was featured in a Jan. 24 USA Today story on her success in the sport of cyclocross, where she is part of a tandem team that won four medals in the 2004 Paralympics.
