Edward J. Pellicciaro
 

Feb. 1, 2005--Edward J. Pellicciaro, 83, of Newark, died Jan. 29 at his home in Windy Hills.

Dr. Pellicciaro joined the UD’s mathematics faculty in 1953 and then received a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University. He returned to UD in 1956, retiring in 1986, when he was named professor emeritus of mathematics.

Born in Beaver Falls, Pa., he grew up in Astoria, N.Y., graduating from Haaren High School in New York City. After serving three years in the U.S. Army during World War II, he received his bachelor’s degree from Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y., and his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina.

While at UD, he also was associated with the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the University of Delaware Research Foundation.

Dr. Pellicciaro was an avid bicyclist, who enjoyed swimming and chess.

He was a member of Holy Angels parish and the Newark Senior Center and was affiliated with numerous scientific and fraternal organizations.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joy Wiley Pellicciaro; three children, Karen Elena of New York City, Mark of Wilmington and Richard Sr. of Chadds Ford, Pa.; two sisters, Gloria Apicella and Violet DeMaria, both of Long Island, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Julia, Richard Jr. and Nicholas.

Funeral services will be private.
