Craig Cary, associate professor of marine studies, was featured in a Jan. 17 National Geographic web site story on the recent “Extreme 2004: Exploring the Deep Frontier” expedition. The UD scientists believe that during the expedition, joined by tens of thousands of schoolchildren worldwide through the Internet, they made important strides in gaining an understanding of how worms that live near very hot hydrothermal vents take advantage of microscopic organisms to endure repeated blasts of scalding water.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Jan. 17 Time magazine story on how corporate board members have gotten a wake-up call in the wake of the WorldCom settlement.

Christopher Sommerfield, assistant professor of marine studies, was quoted in a Jan. 17 Annapolis Capital story about how it is unlikely a major tsunami such as that which devastated South Asia will strike the Mid-Atlantic coast.

Kimmie Meissner and Shaun Rogers, ice skaters who train at the University of Delaware, were featured in ABC-TV coverage of the 2005 State Farm U.S. National Championships in Portland, Ore. Meissner finished third in the ladies event, and Rogers finished sixth in the men’s event. The skaters were also featured in a Jan. 12 Baltimore Sun story in advance of the championship event. Also, Ron Ludington, director of the UD Ice Skating Science Development Center, and Jeff Schneider, strength and conditioning coach for the ice skating program, were featured in an ABC feature on head injuries in the sport.

Daniel Leathers, chairperson of the Department of Geography and state climatologist, was quoted in a Jan. 16 News Journal story concerning the relatively warm winter weather.

Jonathan Sharp, professor of marine studies, was quoted in the Jan. 13 and Jan. 15 issues of the Cherry Hill Courier Post in stories concerning the Delaware River oil spill.

Thomas Church, professor of marine studies, was quoted in the Jan. 13 News Journal in a story on the need for full-time monitoring of the Delaware River for petroleum and other pollutants.

The UD Study Abroad program was mentioned in a Jan. 11 Christian Science Monitor story about the value of relatively short international opportunities, such as that offered during Winter Session. In a roundup of unique trips, the story noted that UD students would be visiting Antarctica.

Paul R. Jones, UD benefactor, was featured in a Jan. 11 Birmingham (Ala.) Post-Herald story about an art show in the city featuring works from the Paul R. Jones Collection.

Christine Zukowski, an ice skater who trains at the University of Delaware, was featured in a story in the Jan. 10 Portland Oregonian. Zukowski won the silver medal in the junior ladies competition at the 2005 State Farm U.S. National Championships.

James Kirby, Edward C. Davis Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was featured in a Jan. 10 News Journal story on how ocean waves shape the Delaware beaches.

Alan Fox, associate professor of philosophy, was quoted in a Jan. 9 News Journal story on how the community is reaching out to assist victims of the South Asia tsunami.
