UD in the News, Jan. 3, 2005 To view past UD in the News, click here. 3:38 p.m., Jan. 3, 2005--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, staff and alumni. Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Jan. 3 Toronto Globe and Mail story on related-party business deals. Elson also was quoted in Bloomberg News stories on Best Buy dropping its auditing firm and on the Securities and Exchange Commission reversing a ruling on the Disney Co. proxy ballot. David W. Smith, associate professor of biological sciences and founder of the Retrosheet baseball statistics service, was quoted in a Jan. 2 New York Times column concerning saves by Major League Baseball pitchers. William Sullivan, managing director of the new Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware, was quoted in a Dec. 31 Centre Daily Times story on the unique partnership between the Shaner Hotel Group of State College, Pa., and UD. Frederick E. Nelson, professor of geography, was quoted in a Dec. 29 British Broadcasting Corp. story on changes to Arctic permafrost. A report by UDs Disaster Research Center was noted in a Dec. 29 British Broadcasting Corp. story on the economic boom in Asian markets after the devastating tsunami. The DRC report concerned the 1993 Des Moines, Iowa, flooding, and found, "Although it is commonly assumed on the basis of anecdotal evidence that disasters result in business failures and bankruptcies on a large scale, our research indicates that most businesses, even those that are especially hard-hit, do indeed recover." UD administrators and researchers were featured prominently in a Dec. 26 News Journal series on biotechnology in Delaware. The stories quoted UD President David P. Roselle and Delaware Biotechnology Institute Director David Weir, and discussed research by Blake Meyers, assistant professor of plant and soil science, and Eric Kmiec, professor of biological sciences. Peter Williams, professor of art, was featured in a Dec. 25 News Journal story. Eight of his paintings are on view through Jan. 28 in Recitation Hall. Valerie Hans, professor of sociology and criminal justice, appeared Dec. 21 on the WHYY-FM Radio Times program. She discussed capital case juries. Joseph Farrell, resource management specialist for the UD Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service, was interviewed Dec. 21 by radio station WILM concerning a dead humpback whale that washed up on shore near Fenwick Island. ALUMNI Mike Adams, a key member of the 2003 NCAA Division I-AA national championship football team, was featured in a Jan. 2 News Journal story.
