5:45 p.m., Jan. 8, 2005--Although Winter Commencement takes place in the new year, the latest graduates are officially members of the Class of 2004, since they completed their degree requirements in August and December. In all, 1,242 degrees are being conferred Jan. 8, including 137 doctoral degrees, 265 master’s degrees, 822 bachelor’s degrees and eight associate degrees.

  • The most mature graduate was Olive Simon Barton, 68, of Newark who received a bachelor’s degree in the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy.
  • A mother and daughter, Pat and Katie Powell of Middletown, both received bachelor’s degrees in family and community services.
  • Graduates represent 37 states and 44 foreign countries. The top five states with the most graduates are, in descending order, Delaware (with 592 students), Pennsylvania (153), New Jersey (147), Maryland (82) and New York (75). The top foreign nations, in descending order, are China (with 55 students), India (37), Korea (9), Botswana and Germany (five each) and France (four).
  • The most popular female name is Jennifer, the most popular male name is Matthew and the most popular family names are Davis and Johnson.
  • The flags on stage at the ceremony celebrate the American states and territories--and more than 100 foreign countries--represented among UD’s student body. The presentation of flags pays tribute to University benefactor Pierre S. du Pont, who played a leadership role in establishing the University’s study abroad program--the first program of its kind in the world. Du Pont Hall is named in his honor. UD is currently ranked sixth among all colleges and universities in the number of students participating in study abroad programs.
