UD’s Kimmie Meissner third in Grand Prix event

Kimmie Meissner
10:15 a.m., Dec. 7, 2004--Fifteen-year-old Kimmie Meissner of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club won the ladies singles bronze medal in the International Skating Union Junior Grand Prix held Dec. 2-5 in Helsinki, Finland.

Meissner bounced back from a difficult short program with the second-best free skate of the competition. As a result, she improved from seventh place to third, behind only Mao Asada of Japan and Yu-Na Kim of South Korea.

Meissner will be among a number of top skaters featured at the U.S. National Figure Skating Send-Off Exhibition to be held at 5 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11, at UD’s Fred Rust Ice Arena.

She will compete in the senior ladies division at the State Farm U.S. National Figure Skating Championships to be held Jan. 9-16, 2005, in Portland, Oregon, taking on such well-known Americans as Michelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen.

The senior ladies short program will be skated at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 14, at the Rose Garden. The free skate will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 15.
