Bird Feeder, cutouts score big off court

8 a.m., Dec. 26, 2004--If the reactions of UD’s youngest sports fans are anything to go by, action on The Bob’s Concourse area this basketball season promises lots of excitement.

Designed by Molly Chappell, an art director in the Office of Public Relations, the Bird Feeder for youngsters debuted in the fall at Delaware Stadium’s concession area. This indoor variation, unveiled this month as a way to bring extra enjoyment to youngsters who attend home basketball games, will be open again for business Wednesday evening, Dec. 29, when the Blue Hens men’s basketball team takes on UMBC.

The colorful Bird Feeder concession stand on the Bob Carpenter Center Concourse offers kid-friendly refreshments, while photo cutouts offer plenty of playful diversion during on-court lulls.

The Bird Feeder, which looks like a treetop with a nest containing baby birds straining to be fed, sells a variety of popular concessions to patrons between 24- and 48-inches tall. And, to make sure there’s no confusion, a painted Baby Blue on the side gives a lighthearted lesson in measuring by proclaiming, “If you’re no bigger than me, you can eat here!”

The menu, consisting of perennial favorites such as hot dogs, popcorn, pretzels, nachos, soda and Blue Blasters, is sized for a junior palate (and budget) as well, with almost nothing costing more than $1.

The cutouts of cheerleaders and YoUDee and a feathered friend allow kids to pose for photos by putting their faces through the holes provided.

The Bird Feeder is located on the concourse under a banner at all home games.
