UD men’s basketball defeats Drexel 67-65

9:39 a.m., Dec. 9, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s basketball team opened Colonial Athletic Association action with a 67-65 victory over Drexel University on Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

With the victory, the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the CAA.

UD will return to action on its home court with a game against Rider University at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11. In that game, the Hens will sport throwback uniforms from the 1950s.

In Wednesday’s victory, UD junior forward Harding Nana scored 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Hens past Drexel, which was coming off a victory over NCAA Division I championship tournament quarterfinalist St. Joseph’s University.

The Hens, who now hold a slim all-time advantage of 67-62 in this fierce rivalry, also got 15 points from guard Andrew Washington while Rulon Washington came off the bench to add 10 points, including two three-pointers, and Mike Slattery had eight assists.

The first half featured five ties but UD took a five-point lead at 36-31 after two free throws by Rulon Washington with 2:31 left before Drexel rallied to take the two-point halftime advantage.

After five ties in the first six minutes of the second half, the Hens took control as Andrew Washington hit a three-pointer and a lay-up around two Calvin Smith free throws to give UD a 54-47 edge with 11:50 remaining for its biggest lead of the night.

Drexel pared the lead down over the next five minutes and tied the game again at 57-57 with 6:23 left. The Hen answered with a big run as Nana hit two jumpers and Lebo Maepa converted another for a 63-57 lead with 4:28 remaining.

UD retained the lead the rest of the game despite several Drexel comebacks and the game was not decided until a last-second shot by Drexel’s Bashir Mason missed the mark.
