Fallers named assistant baseball coach

11 a.m., Dec. 13, 2004--University of Delaware Head Coach Jim Sherman has announced the addition of 1997 Wilmington College graduate Jim Fallers to the Fightin’ Blue Hens staff as an assistant baseball coach for the 2005 season.

Fallers, whose primary responsibility will be to work with the UD catchers, previously spent two years as an assistant coach at Wilmington College, where he served as the catchers’ coach and assistant hitting coach. He also served as the first base coach.

In 2003, Wilmington College fell one game shy of reaching the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) World Series.

During his playing days for the Wildcats, Fallers was a four-year starter at catcher, receiving All-Region and All-America honors in 1995, 1996 and 1997. He was a two-year captain and a two-time team Most Valuable Player and during his freshman and sophomore years participated in the NAIA World Series.

"I recruited Jim when I was the head baseball coach and athletic director at Wilmington College, and he was as good a local catch-and-throw guy there was coming out of William Penn High School," Sherman said. "I was excited about recruiting him and having him in the program. I'm just as excited about having him come on board here at Delaware as a coach. Jim will be a great addition with our catchers and will be valuable at our practices."

In addition to being the primary catching coach for the Hens, Fallers will also assist with the UD outfielders and as an assistant hitting coach.

Fallers and wife, Melissa, reside in New Castle with their twin sons, Brendan and James. Jim is employed at Upper Bay Counseling and Support Services as a caseworker for at-risk youth, and Melissa is employed by the University of Delaware Department of Chemical Engineering as a research technician.
