Blue Hens picked fourth in CAA baseball poll

9:33 a.m., Jan. 20, 2005--The University of Delaware baseball team is picked to finish fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association this season, with the University of North Carolina Wilmington the favorite to defend its title.

UNC Wilmington received five first-place votes and 60 total points in the poll of the CAA’s nine head coaches, while George Mason University picked up the other four first-place votes and had 57 total points.

The College of William and Mary was third in the balloting with 48 points, followed closely by UD with 45 points and Virginia Commonwealth University with 40 points. James Madison University was chosen sixth in the poll, followed by Old Dominion University, Towson University and Hofstra University.

UNC Wilmington returns 20 lettermen from last year’s 40-23 squad that tied a school record for wins and advanced to the regional finals of the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row.

Head Coach Jim Sherman’s Fightin’ Blue Hens have eight position starters back from last year’s 33-24 team that reached the CAA title game and nearly defeated UNC Wilmington. Among the returning players for UD are first team All-CAA catcher Brian Valichka, who hit .362 with seven home runs and 27 runs batted in, and second team All-CAA designated hitter Kelly Buber, who hit .343 with nine home runs and 51 runs batted in. Senior right-hander Scott Rambo, who went 7-6 with 79 strikeouts, will anchor the pitching staff.

UD will open the 2005 season with a three-game series at the University of North Carolina Greensboro scheduled Feb. 18-20. The first home game will be played March 3 against St. Joseph’s University at Bob Hannah Stadium.
