Cross, Mooney selected Academic All-Americans

9:06 a.m., Dec. 3, 2004--University of Delaware senior defensive linemen Ben Cross and Chris Mooney have been named to the 2004 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America football team.

Cross was named first team Academic All-America and is the first Fightin’ Blue Hen in 32 years to be so honored. Tackle Yancy Phillips was a first team selection in 1970, and defensive end Bob Depew was a first team selection in both 1971 and 1972.

Cross is majoring in civil engineering and has a grade point average of 3.947.

Mooney was named second team Academic All-America. He is majoring in accounting and has a grade point average of 3.509.

Cross was named second team Academic All-America last season and is a three-time member of the CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic team. Cross has appeared in all 12 games this season, has started two games and has registered 20 tackles. He has 5.5 tackles for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery. He is a three-time member of the Atlantic 10 Conference academic honor roll and is the 2004 Atlantic 10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Mooney, who earned first team All-Atlantic 10 honors this season, ranks among the top defensive linemen in the country. Like Cross, he is a three-time member of the CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic team. He has started all 12 games this season and ranks ninth on the team with 41 tackles. He has 11 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and three pass break-ups. He is a three-time member of the Atlantic 10 academic honor roll.

Cross and Mooney were among just 48 NCAA Division I-A and Division I-AA scholar-athletes honored in a vote of NCAA member sports information directors. To be eligible, scholar-athletes must carry a grade point average of 3.2 or higher and be a starter or key reserve for his team. ESPN The Magazine sponsors the Academic All-America team.
