Works for Jones Collection on display in Alabama 2:37 p.m., Jan. 31, 2005--Thirty works drawn from the collection of University of Delaware benefactor Paul R. Jones are on view through Feb. 27 in an exhibition entitled “Works from the Paul R. Jones Collection: The African Diaspora” in the Odessa Woolfolk Gallery at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) in Birmingham, Ala. The Paul R. Jones Collection is one of the oldest, largest and most complete collections of works by 20th-Century African American artists and is centered in Mechanical Hall on the UD campus. Currently, UD is continuing its own exhibition, “A Century of African American Art: The Paul R. Collection,” in both Mechanical Hall and University Gallery in Old College. The exhibition will run through the end of this academic year. Collaboration with the BCRI is a natural, given that Jones spent his childhood in a mining community in neighboring Bessemer. The area “is home, and that certainly factored into lending the art,” Jones told the magazine Birmingham Weekly. In addition, Jones said he has been interested in the work of the BCRI and was pleased to find a way to support its efforts. "This is one of the most important exhibitions the institute will receive," Ahmad Ward, BCRI director of education, said. "Hopefully, this is the start of a long collaboration." The exhibition includes works by the noted photographer P.H. Polk, himself a native of Bessemer, Amos “Ashanti” Johnson, Valerie Maynard, Herman “Kofi” Bailey and the collector’s son, Paul R.
