Extension launches campaign against driving drunk 2:33 p.m., Jan. 27, 2005--Dont drink and drive on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 6. Pass the keys to a designated driver is the message from UDs Cooperative Extensions Community Traffic Safety Program and University radio station, WVUD (91.3 FM). They are part of the team reminding the public of the consequences of drinking and driving, which also includes the Delaware Designated Driver Program and Delaware Office of Highway Safety. The campaign features public service announcements (PSAs) from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to Cindy Genau, extension agent II, who has coordinated the Community Traffic Safety Program for eight years. The PSAs are directed at college students and fans--young men between the ages of 18 and 34 who are at risk and over-represented in impaired driving accidents, Genau said. The PSAs have been recorded by Jim Flatley, senior assistant director of Public Safety at UD; Andrew Rubin of the Newark Police Department; and UD senior John Jefferson, according to Chuck Tarver, assistant director, student centers. Jeffersons recording was a project for Tarvers radio programming and production class. The recordings by Flatley and Jefferson will be aired by WVUD, and the recording by Rubin will be broadcast locally on WSTW (93.7 FM) and WJBR (99.5 FM). The Designated Driver Program also has made PSAs for the campaign. The message reminds listeners: Its one thing to lose a game, but driving drunk can mean losing your license, your job, your reputation or your life. So dont be a loser on Super Bowl Sunday. If you drink during the game, complete the pass. Give your keys to a designated driver. And, if your friend is drinking, make him hand off his keys, because Friends dont let friends drive drunk.
