Ag agent wins Farm Bureau awards

Robert Baker (right), president of the Delaware Farm Bureau, presents an award for service to agriculture in the state to Carl Davis.
2:47 p.m., Feb. 2, 2005--Carl Davis, agricultural agent for New Castle County (NCC) Cooperative Extension at UD, has been honored by the Delaware Farm Bureau for his service to agriculture in the state.

He also recently received the “Distinguished Service to New Castle County Agriculture” award from the county Farm Bureau.

“It is through Carl’s hard work, professionalism and dedication to his field that New Castle County agricultural producers have improved their lives and their livelihoods,” Maria Pippidis, county director for NCC Extension, said. “He is a true asset to Extension and UD College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.”

Working with large and small farming operations in New Castle County, Davis offers farmers up-to-date information on a number of issues, including nutrient management, marketing, farm safety, irrigation, production, pests and weed management and plant variety selection. Davis also helps farmers develop computer skills.

For the past four years, Davis has chaired the NCC “Day on the Farm” event--an educational program to promote agricultural awareness and stewardship. Working with a different host farm each year, he has helped to showcase the importance of agriculture through educational displays, tours and youth activities.

Davis also is involved in public-issues education, including town forums to address residential growth and loss of farmland in New Castle County.

Davis holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in entomology from UD. He began his career as a research assistant at the University in the Department Of Entomology and Applied Ecology and later joined the agricultural products department of the DuPont Co. In 1994 he returned to UD as an Extension agent.
