UD women’s swimming team sweeps Towson, JMU

Sarah Peffer won three events to lead UD.
10:41 a.m., Jan. 12, 2004--The University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team captured 10 first-place finishes, including three by Sarah Peffer, to earn a sweep over Towson and James Madison universities in a Colonial Athletic Association tri-meet held Sunday afternoon at the Harry Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The UD women (7-1) defeated James Madison 153-87 and Towson 139-103 to highlight the final home meet of the season. On the men's side, James Madison won six races for a sweep over UD and Towson. The Fightin’ Blue Hen men (1-7) fell to James Madison by a score of 137-96 and to Towson by a score of 140-96.

Peffer won the 1,000 freestyle (10:28.18), the 400 individual medley (4:34.29) and the 500 freestyle (5:06.08) to pace the Hens.

Also winning individual titles were Jill Fitzgerald in the 50 freestyle (24.83) and 100 freestyle (53.75), Sara Stephens in the 200 butterfly (2:07.13) and 200 breaststroke (2:26.43), Sara Reed in the 200 backstroke (2:09.60) and Meredith Law in the 200 freestyle (1:57.36).

Also winning was the 400 medley relay team of Kristen Avioli, Lauren Ostroski, Stephens and Fitzgerald (4:00.46).

Placing second for the Hens were Kim Fields in the 1,000 freestyle (10:46.89), Sarah Bergan in the one-meter dive (189.90) and Law in the 500 freestyle (5:14.90).

Freshman diver Dan O'Connell led the UD men by winning both the one-meter and three-meter dives, his first sweep of the events this season. He posted 182.5 points in the one-meter and 185.20 points in the three-meter.

The Hens got a third-place finish from the 400 freestyle relay team (3:23.59) of Colin Gibson, Michael Rasch, Joe Virion and Jeff Shields. Also finishing in third were Stephen Wolf in the one-meter dive (146.85), Brendan Spencer in the 200 backstroke (2:01.19) and Virion in the 500 freestyle (4:55.93).

UD will close out its dual meet season on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Loyola College of Maryland in Baltimore.

The CAA championships will be held Feb. 18-21 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
